Marmot
Private dialogue on open networks.
Marmot is a protocol for end-to-end encrypted group messaging. It combines Nostr public keys for identity with Messaging Layer Security for group key agreement, giving builders a shared foundation for private conversations.
Bring identity and encryption together
Nostr supplies an identity people can use across applications. MLS handles the cryptographic state of a changing group. Marmot specifies how these pieces work together, including how application content is represented inside encrypted messages.
Delivery without a single point of dependence
Marmot clients can exchange messages through Nostr relays, with redundant delivery so a group need not depend on one endpoint. The protocol separates delivery from identity and encryption, allowing other transports to be used as well.
Build on the shared protocol
MDK implements Marmot for application developers. Cohort projects such as nostr MLS and Marmot Chat explore how these foundations can be used.
