Sovereign Engineering / Building block
MDK
From messaging protocol to working code.
The Marmot Development Kit is a Rust implementation of the Marmot protocol. It gives developers reusable components for encrypted group messaging, connecting the protocol’s rules to the code an application needs.
The machinery behind the conversation
MDK uses OpenMLS for group key agreement and manages the state that changes as a conversation evolves. Its workspace includes storage and integration components so applications can preserve that state between sessions.
Connect it to an application
Transport adapters connect the messaging engine to delivery networks such as Nostr. Bindings and application integration layers let builders use the shared implementation while developing their own interfaces and experiences.
Understand the layers
Start with MLS for the encryption model, Marmot for the messaging protocol, and Nostr for identity and relay-based delivery. MDK brings those foundations into an implementation that builders can work with.
